Security Cameras Hidden Cameras

Fitting Geeks and Everyday Users Alike

As much as geeks might appreciate the ieGeek ZS-GX5, the camera will likewise accommodate customers who have no interest in these things. What they want is a reliable, dependable, and performant security camera, which is precisely what we're dealing with here. Its specs are pretty great, the construction is solid, and the features are plentiful and well-executed.

To start with, the camera boasts an IP65 enclosure, preventing dust and splashes from entering the housing. The double-layer vacuum encasing and the waterproof lens with a rubber ring will make sure the model's protected from the elements. Of course, at this price point (~80 quid), there's nothing necessarily impressive about this enclosure. The two-way audio, on the other hand, is quite alright. Holding the intercom button, you can communicate with people outside, scare thieves and/or intruders away, or interact with babies/pets from a different room.

When the camera detects motion, you receive a notification with a snapshot on the app. Adopting smart detection tech, the camera distinguishes between subjects and objects, minimising false alerts. Plus, you can switch between human detection or motion detection. With the first mode turned off, the camera will detect even small animals. Turning this mode back on, the model will be ignoring animals and only sending you notifications when it detects people.

You can adjust its sensitivity and set the camera to start recording video 20 seconds, 40 seconds, or a minute after detecting motion. Whilst the model's sensors are top-notch, they're not quite as excellent in the speed/reaction department. More often than not, they take ~5 seconds to detect motion, which is not great relative to the product's price tag.

130-Degree Viewing Angle

The 3 infrared LEDs that this camera incorporates come as no surprise. Automatically turning on when there's very little (or none at all) ambient lighting, these LEDs provide sufficient light compensation, covering <20 metres (65 feet).

As good as these are, the main culprit behind the model's success is the 130-viewing angle and its outstanding battery life. With the huge viewing angle, this device covers more than most security cameras, so you'll see what's happening on the sides as well. In the somewhat same vein, the integrated 10000 mAh battery lasts months (2-6, depending on multiple factors) on a single charge.

Bottom line, the ieGeek ZS-GX5 runs circles around its competition without moving an inch.

4 Floodlights and 5 IR Lights

The Ctronics G007 looks intense, and we can see why the people behind this device went with this design.

Panning 355 degrees and tilting 90 degrees, the camera covers every surrounding angle, so there's no chance someone might slip beneath it or approach from a side undetected. As you'd expect, you can rotate this security camera from your smartphone or PC as the unit's compatible with Windows, Android, and iOS.

The second reason behind the model's aggressive appearance is the dual light source design that features 4 floodlights and 5 IR lights. Between these, the camera's viewing range stretches 20 metres (~65 feet) even at night.

This is no cheap product, which means that certain features come without saying. These features include the camera recording Full HD (1920 x 1080p) footage. To some extent, they also include the IP66-rated housing, making the model dust-tight and protecting its internal components against not just heavy downpours but even complete submersion.

Apart from that, the aforementioned mobile app will let you use the embedded microphone, recording what's happening around the camera as well as the ambient sound on the scene. Whilst its functionality is respectable, the app's UI is a little clunky, so we would recommend figuring out the settings and the controls from the get-go so that you can avoid problems down the road.

However, there's nothing clunky about the integrated humanoid algorithm. With its sensitive image processing, the algorithm makes sure the camera avoids false alarms, so when a notification comes, you can be pretty certain that something is happening there.

Boosting the Wireless Range

As you can tell from the pictures, the camera comes equipped with 2 external antennas. Boosting the WiFi range, these antennas keep the connection secure and let you position the camera pretty much anywhere you want without moving the modem/router.

Pivoting a little, the model's functionality also features automatic tracking. When someone moves in front, this device will also move, making sure that the person is always in the centre of the frame.

Security-wise, this security camera uses AES 128-bit encryption, rendering brute-force attacks not just ineffective but downright pointless. The encrypted footage can be stored on a cloud or an SD card.

Long story short, the Ctronics G007 puts you in charge, letting you secure and control every angle that this camera covers, leaving intruders no chance.

Identical Daytime and Nighttime Performance

The Wansview W4 is a modest little fellow. Measuring 18.6 x 10.4 x 8.8 centimetres and weighing less than 500 grammes, this model occupies very little space and puts an almost nonexistent load on the supporting structure. Coming at ~30 quid, this is not some high-end security camera, so don't expect miracles from it. That being said, we have very few substantial problems with this product. The model cannot record on SD cards, so you'll be stuck with cloud storage only. Besides that, most problems with the camera are negligible, at least where the average user's concerned.

First things first, there's nothing wrong with its 110-degree wide-angle lens, covering not just what's in front but also the surrounding area. What's more, the model features 4X digital zoom, so you can enlarge its focus and find the smallest details on the monitoring area that you might miss otherwise.

At night, this camera is almost as effective as it is during the day. Employing 24 IR LEDs, this device can make even complete darkness submit to its will. Not unlike its more expensive peers, the model's viewing range peaks at 20 metres, which is a pretty impressive accomplishment at this price.

Setting its nighttime performance aside, this device is cut pretty much from the same cloth that the best security cameras are made from, with its IP65-rated body offering uncompromised weatherproof performance, whilst the aluminium-alloy housing protects the cam from vandals.

Excellent Sensors

Going back to the common playbook that most security cameras follow, the Wansview W4 comes outfitted with an external antenna, making sure that the WiFi connection remains stable.

Of course, the model also offers motion detection, with above-average sensors seldom missing even faint movements. When the camera detects motion, you receive an alert, so you can view the video without delay without missing a single emergency case. You can also download the video from the company's cloud. The delay between the motion and the sensors identifying motion is virtually nonexistent (~1 second) and, as always, you can adjust its sensitivity, preventing alerts from flying birds or cars passing by.

Last but not least, the camera enables remote view between multiple users, meaning that you can share the responsibility between your family members. Taking that and everything that we've outlined above into account, the Wansview W4 is practically unrivalled within this price bracket.

Seamless User Experience

The SV3C B07W, despite the somewhat convoluted name, is a pretty straightforward device. In most ways, the model has no trouble competing with security cameras that cost twice as much as this one. Having said that, the model's not without its flaws. First and foremost, we're not crazy about its viewing angle. Capping at 70 degrees, this device does not let you view the sides quite as well as its competition within this selection. Generally speaking, 70 degrees is plenty, but since there are multiple cameras that cost around as much as this one and go above 100 degrees, we cannot let this mishap slide. We will, however, let the company's mobile app slide.

Not dissimilar to most security cameras, this model is compatible with PC and mobile devices, including Android and iOS. Whilst there's nothing wrong with the PC app, the mobile application is where this product shines the most, with its straightforward UI and a seamless menu structure that even inexperienced, least tech-savvy users can navigate with relative ease.

When the camera detects motion, the app receives an immediate notification, including a snapshot and/or a recording. You can also make the system send you an email alarm to go with the in-app notification. As you would expect, the motion sensors can be adjusted, preventing or, at the very least, decreasing false alarms.

Storage-wise, you can choose between cloud storage and Micro SD cards. Needless to say, since the camera costs 30 quid, the shipment does not include a complementary card. But the camera accepts Micro SD cards up to 128 gigabytes, so you can store a pretty respectable footage collection.

30 IR LEDs

Even at this level, security cameras nowadays seldom arrive without two-way audio, with integrated microphones and speakers letting you communicate with the person at the entrance. Likewise, even the cheapest models today sport at least an IP65 enclosure. With this one, the housing boasts an IP66 protection class, protecting this device against the elements, whilst the aluminium body protects this device from vandals. The model can handle temperatures between -20 and 60 degrees Celcius, which means that there are no environments that can restrain its performance. Finally, the 30-piece IR LED setup delivers excellent night vision on an at least 20-metre range, making sure that the camera is equally effective at night and during the day.

In closing, the SV3C B07W will enable reliable surveillance on a pretty strict budget.

More Discreet

The Wansview 760b is a beefy device, ditching the sleek white look that most security cameras adopt these days and sticking with what's been working for decades now. With its all-black finish (aside from the thin line encircling the lens and the company's white logo), the camera appears a lot more discreet than its mates within this lineup, attracting less attention, which is seldom a bad thing with security cams. Plus, the black finish does not quite highlight scratches as much as white surfaces and is not as easily soiled as they are.

The model's performance is as good as those cameras that we have reviewed above. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the package. Other than the camera, you're shipped a mount, mounting hardware, a power adapter, and an Ethernet cable, meaning that you receive more or less the usual package. However, the mounting hardware (primarily the fixings) are quite short, so you'll have to replace them or make sure the camera's view is not obstructed.

Again, in the performance department, we have no complaints. The camera can record Full HD (1920 x 1080p) video. Its viewing angle pushes 110 degrees, which is quite good considering that the device measures moderate 26.3 x 19 x 8.1 centimetres. The model also integrates an Alexa module, letting you choose between in-app controls and voice commands. The company's application remains unchanged, offering multiple useful features and making them easily accessible. Among these features, you'll find a 4X digital zoom, allowing you to enlarge the video and identify small details. The same app will receive alert messages upon motion detection. Besides that, you can also download alert videos from the cloud or save them on a Micro SD card.

Two-Way Audio

Coming equipped with a microphone and speakers, the camera offers two-way audio, doubling as an intercom or a nanny cam when necessary. Removing these features from the equation, there's nothing especially new or interesting left here. As per usual, the model can be mounted on a wall or a pedestal stand. Its IP66-rated construction will have no issues with rain, snow, or dust. Plus, the camera can handle pretty extreme temperature fluctuations (between -15 and 50+ degrees Celcius). Furthermore, the aluminium-alloy outer casing can withstand reasonable physical damage.

To sum up, the Wansview 760b can keep pretty sizable premises protected from intruders. Moreover, with its 12 850-nanometre infrared LEDs, the camera's night vision distance reaches 25 metres.

What Is a Security Camera?

Today, the market offers a great variety of video surveillance systems, which goes to prove that technology, as well as the digital world, never stands still. You can find a whole lot of smart models which can let you perform a wide range of tasks, starting from simply monitoring what's happening on your property and ending with the option to start a conversation with whoever's there in your yard, all without even having to be at home. Depending on the intended use, security cameras may have a different set of features shared between them and range in price from around 50 to 200-300 quids. So you should decide which camera will be best for your home. Hopefully, our selection of the best smart security cameras we've picked out for you will help you with that. And once you've found the model you think is right for you, check our tips for selecting and installing the camera.

It is worth noticing that most security cameras today connect to a WiFi network. If you have issues with your network or you keep losing signal outside, we recommend checking out wireless routers and wireless extenders reviews as well.

What Features to Compare

First off, decide what tasks you want your camera to perform and whether you want to install it indoors or outdoors. Further on, think of what kind of security system will be most suitable for your home: wireless or wired, with one or a few cameras used.

Types of Cameras

Typically, there are wired and wireless cameras, as well as indoor and outdoor models, all featuring different mounting options (wall, pedestal stand, or combined). Cameras designed for use outdoors are notable for their ability to withstand various weather conditions. They feature a more durable casing and come at a bit higher cost than indoor models. Meanwhile, indoor security cameras are cheaper and will be indispensable for those who want to monitor the activity inside of their house.

To speak more about the types of cameras.

Wired cameras connect to security system equipment via wires. The advantage of a wired connection is that it allows connecting the camera to an existing home network or corporate network as well as granting access to the camera's control and data using other devices or even remotely, via the Internet. This results in a more reliable data transfer to the recording equipment. Another strength of wired models is that they are insensitive to the interference of mobile phones, Bluetooth-devices, wireless network equipment and car alarm systems, reducing signal loss to the minimum.

Wireless security cameras transmit the signal to a recording device via a wireless connection (WiFi, Bluetooth). And IP cameras, which appeared on the market relatively recently, broadcast live footage directly onto the user's registered device once you so desire. Some of the smartest wireless cameras can even record video to the camera's SD card letting you view the footage in realtime, regardless of where you are at that particular moment.

Video Quality

The next thing to check out is video quality. Consider the resolution and make sure it provides enough detail to enable you to easily recognize what or who the camera's looking at. 720p cameras will offer a sharp enough image, but a far better choice would be to go for a camera that can capture Full HD footage. It can be viewed on nearly all digital devices and it doesn't take a lot of storage space. You can also find models that will capture 4k video. They will provide more detail, however, keep note that they will also require a very good network connection to ensure a lag-free viewing experience. Aside from the resolution, check out whether the camera you choose can record night vision video. Most cameras you'll find on the market today use IR LEDs which allow them to produce white-and-black footage, but there are also cameras using white light - these are a better choice if you want to be able to view a full-color video. Finally, consider motion and sound detectors. These will provide you with an additional layer of security instantly informing you if there's somebody on your property, even if the camera is not looking at them.

Video Storage

Last but not least, decide how you want the camera to store the recorded video. Most cameras today offer you to store your footage in the cloud for a certain number of days; after this time, the video is deleted. Others will require a subscription. There are also security cameras that will allow you to store your footage locally. If you worry about your video being stored in the cloud, consider models equipped with a micro SD slot. And if you need a camera that will allow you to view everything that has been happening around when you were not at home, go for a model with a Continuous Video Recording Plan. These have a memory for storing up to 30 days of 27/7 footage.
