GreenWorks 1301507UC
Compromises are Unnecessary
The Greenworks Tools 1301507UC is mean. Where most machines are forced to sacrifice, choosing between performance, controls, and overall convenience, this string trimmer shines across the entire board. To begin with, its 40-volt battery offers the most tremendous output, whacking the toughest, most stubborn weeds with unparalleled ease. Well, the battery is not whacking them, this is not what we're implying here. What we're saying is that the battery powers the machine, enabling this output. What's more, the battery boasts fade-free performance without memory loss after charging. You can easily attach and remove the model's battery when necessary, but enough about this component already.
As important as it is, the battery is not more important than the trimmer's construction, starting with the start (apologies, we had to). To start the machine, you're not using tangled cables, you're not entertaining any tripping hazards, you're not dealing with any complicated setup mechanisms. Press the button and let loose, enabling this compact machinery piece to do its job.
The compact part, by the way, is quite surprising considering the model's output yet, measuring 28 x 97 x 18 centimetres, with the 97 value referring to its length, the machine hangs with the "compact" crowd without standing out. That being said, weighing 4.5 kilogrammes, this string trimmer might be the least lightweight representative of that crowd.
From Trimming to Scything
Setting the above rambling aside, the model's biggest selling point is probably its 2-in-1 disposition. As a trimmer, the machine can handle sensitive garden areas, including lawn edges. Then, you can switch to the scythe mode, cutting tall grass and even small bushes and shrubs. The aforementioned battery enables trimming long grass around the lawn, precise lawn edging, and clipping tough grass. While you're cutting, the machine will be producing minimum noise and vibrations, keeping you comfortable throughout.
Addressing the smaller details, the 25-centimetre cutting blade and the shoulder strap will be offering easy handling, whereas the two-piece aluminium rod, featuring steel connection, will be providing the necessary stability. Still, these components are not as appealing as the rotating handle, allowing you to easily reach any angle without bending.
Bottom line, the Greenworks Tools 1301507U offers safe, effective, and efficient trimming, cutting, and scything, managing any garden size without hiccups.

Bosch UniversalGrassCut 18-260
Universal Grass Trimmer
The Bosch UniversalGrassCut 18-260 Grass Strimmer is a universal and affordable string trimmer that can be used in residential gardens to tackle overgrown plants. It's lightweight, well-balanced and adjustable, so whacking weeds and patches of grass even in awkward places such as along the edging or under your outdoor furniture will be an easy-breezy task. One other distinct feature about the 18-260 is that it has the IntelliFEED feature which automatically feeds the spool line to full cutting width. This adds to its conveniences, making it ideal for a whole variety of cutting tasks. How about its power though?
Well, as long as you do not expect the tool to strim away really woody weeds and thick plants, it won't disappoint. Fitted with a 1.6mm cutting line, the tool can go through most short and long grass, stems, and plants like cowslips with effortless ease.
What will also not disappoint is that this gas strimmer, just like all Bosch's tools, is fitted with a capacious 2 Ah battery. Not only does it offer you the advantage of easily interchanging it across the whole assortment of other Bosch's tools that have the same voltage, but also it is long-lasting and powerful enough to make a quick job of most trimming and cutting tasks, drastically reducing the time you'd need to spend on lawn upkeep.
Walk-Behind Edger Too
Contributing to the comfort of use is the ergonomic and back-friendly tool's design. The split handles of the tool are adjustable in height to encourage good posture. The plastic housing feels great and the foot pedal makes switching between modes easy and quick. Also included is a wheelset that can be used as an optional accessory to turn the trimmer into a walk-behind edger. Speaking of which, make sure to attach it to the tool carefully to prevent it from coming off during use.
What's not less important is that the trimmer has a quite small weight. Weighing around 3.94 kg with the battery included, moving it along the grass and rotating it for edging work won't be a hassle.
Summing up, the Bosch UniversalGrassCut 10-260 Grass Strimmer has a lot going for it. Packed full of features, it's affordable and easy to use. More importantly, it does an excellent job of strimming away even quite thick and tall grass and can also be used as an edger for trimming in tricky locations.

Flymo 9669523-01 Contour XT
Best for Small to Medium-Sized Lawns
Our next choice is the Flymo 9669523-01 Countour XT Electric Grass Trimmer. This model comes at a ridiculously low price but despite that, it has many features, including such as a lightweight design, 300W of power, and a cutting line with a diameter of 1.5 mm, making it an excellent helper in your garden. The combination of these features along with the power output translates into a tool that has a solid performance ideal for taking care of small to medium-sized lawns.
Naturally, it does have some moments, too. One of them is that its cord is relatively short compared to some other models, which means you may need to use an extension lead if your lawn is on the bigger side. The other one is the lack of an auto-feed function. Thus, whenever the cutting line runs out, jams or breaks, you'll need to adjust and feed it out of your hand, which is the trade-off you should be willing to pay for its low price. In general, though, as long as your garden is not too big, doing it won't be a problem.
Other than that, there's nothing disappointing about it. The tool is convenient to use and easy to assemble with only 2-3 parts to put together, so the whole process won't take you longer than a few minutes. It's also quite easy to move. The weight of the 9669523-01 is only 2.8 kg, so even if you need to use it for several hours on end you will be able to do it without tiring your arm.
Conveniences
As far as conveniences go, the Flymo 9669523-01 Contour XT Electric Grass Trimmer is featured with an edging wheel and a plant guard which do an excellent job of trimming along the boards and around flower beds. Plus, there's the option to adjust the angle of the cutting head, so you can use it for trimming some inaccessible edges without worrying that it might somehow chop plants and flowers to pieces. It's also worth mentioning that the trimmer has an ergonomic handle with a soft grip and a cable storage facility that make it more convenient to store it after use.
Overall, the 9669523-01 offers a good value. Assuming you've got a small to mid-sized garden with intricate edging, this trimmer will fit the job. It's reasonably lightweight, easy to use, and perfect for cutting flowers beds and other spots unmanageable for a lawnmower.

Ryobi OLT1832 ONE+
All About Versatility
The Ryobi OLT1832 ONE+ comes from humble beginnings yet the machine is not as modest as you'd presume from the modest price. Sure, the flaws are there. The plastic blade attachments can be difficult to adjust. The noise levels reach ~95 decibels, which's not terrible but we have seen less noisy string trimmers before. Nevertheless, the machine has its moments too, not excluding its 2.3-kilogramme weight (without the battery) and the long, 103-centimetre reach. It goes without saying, this length allows you to trim without moving around as much as you'd be with short trimmers. To add more, the machine lets you adjust the cutting width between 25 and 30 centimetres, switching between precision trimming and wide-angle cutting. You'll be able to go from clipping sensitive garden areas to whacking weeds above weeds above weeds.
More often than not, these machines make between edging and trimming pretty inconvenient. Here, using the EasyEdge™ tech, you can switch between these two modes via one button, enabling quick transitions and allowing you to continue cutting without taking unnecessary breaks.
Even without this tech though, versatility is the name of the game here. Aside from the adjustable cutting width and these quick mode transitions, the machine also adopts the company's signature three-position pivoting string head, offering more versatile trimming and giving you the means to easily change the cutting angle without slouching, crouching, and bending. Is that where the game concludes? Not quite. In the same vein, you have the telescoping boom and the length-adjustable handle, accommodating different user heights and, again, enabling you to trim and edge without bending.
Minimising Vibrations
Setting aside the multiple adjustment mechanisms, the machine's identity starts fading away. Sure, shipped as a bare unit, the product saves you money but that also means you have to purchase the battery and the charger separately. On the upside, the model's vibration uncertainty caps at 1.5 and the handle's at 0.15 m/s², so you can use the machine without experiencing noticeable fatigue and discomfort. Last but not least, the automatic line feed mechanism is fast and consistent, not unlike most budget string trimmers'.
In closing, the Ryobi OLT1832 ONE+ is the one, the one that will allow you to maintain the cleanest, most nice-looking garden without spending more than 65 quid.

BLACK + DECKER STC1820PC-GB
Fast Cutting Machine
Not without a reason, Black + Decker is so popular among users. This brand has made a name for itself by producing high-quality tools at affordable prices which allowed them to come to the forefront of the industry and take one of the leading positions on the market. What about the STC1820PC-GB? Highly rated by customers, this tool can serve as proof of excellent product quality.
To kick things off, let's first touch upon performance. The STC1820PC-GB has a cutting swath of 28cm and reaches the speed of up to 5500-7400 RPM, making it ideal for fast job completion over larger areas. Furthermore, it's compatible with the CM100. Using this add-on, you can change and vary the trimmer's cutting height settings for more controlled trimming around fences, edges, and walls.
When it comes to the cutting system, the tool is nothing to sneeze at, too. It is powered by an 18V Li-Ion battery with 2.0Ah of charge that gives it a run time of up to 30 minutes. Considering the tool's tech and its affordable price, this time is quite long and should be enough to cut a small to medium-sized lawn without the need to recharge the battery. The recharging time, in turn, is only 5 hours. Plus, just like with Bosch tools, the battery of this one can be swapped for another one from Black + Decker's line, so if you need more time to complete a job, extending the run time is possible.
On the note of performance, let's also mention E-Drive Technology. Thanks to this technology, you can change the power of the trimmer between two modes - eco and turbo - making it better suited for lighter or more heavy-duty cutting jobs. Also, this helps save the battery and prevent it from getting stuck when used in tougher areas.
Other Highlights
To proceed with the other highlights, we'd like to mention that the Black + Decker STC1820PC-GB has an automatic single line feed system. This means the tool will automatically detect when a line snaps or breaks and feed a new one saving you from having to stop trimming and doing it out of your hand. Also, the Black + Decker STC1820PC-GB incorporates the Trim’n’Edge feature which will allow you to convert the trimmer into an edger by quickly twisting the pole of the tool. Finally, you can't but like the fact that the trimmer's secondary handle is adjustable, meaning it will suit all users and won't make your back ache.
To conclude, if there are lots of paths, edges, and walls in your garden, the STC1820 18V strimmer might be a great choice for you. Powerful, well-designed, and highly adjustable, it'll do most of the work for you. Besides, you won't need to be worrying if there's a power socket nearby.

What Is a String Trimmer?
A string trimmer has many names - this tool is also called a weed whacker, weed eater, grass trimmer, and so on. As the very name indicates, this tool is used to cut grass and weeds, just like a lawn mower, but weed whackers allow you to handle steep and hard-to-reach places. Also, they are much cheaper than conventional lawn mowers and require smaller storage space. A weed eater has a long shaft with a cutting head at the end. Of course, there is an engine, a handle and a shoulder strap included to let you carry a string trimmer without a hassle.
Grass trimmers are usually used together with other garden tools such as gas and electric chainsaws, lawn mowers, etc.
What Features to Compare
There are many string trimmer reviews on the Internet, but making the right choice is still a challenging task for a lot of people, which is understandable considering that these reviews often provide either too much unnecessary information or too many useless details. Knowing that we've done our best to make our weed eater review maximum clear and informative so we've compared 5 best string trimmers by the core features that present the utmost importance for users.
Operation
First of all, you should decide what kind of operation you expect the tool to deliver. This is largely affected by the type of engine the tool uses. Gas powered weed eaters are quite powerful but they require fueling, meaning if you opt for this type of string trimmer, you'll need to make sure to take care of it. You can also opt for electric string trimmers, cordless (powered by batteries) or corded, depending on your particular needs. Although electric models are not as powerful as gas-powered models, you can find trimmers yielding about 1400 Watts, which brings them close to those.
Usability
The next thing to consider is usability features - using a grass trimmer should not be taxing nor should it put strain on your back, therefore it's essential to check out its conveniences, namely, whether a weed eater has an adjustable handle for comfortable use by people of different heights, a shoulder strap for carrying, a quick-start feature to save you time, and the like. If you choose a cordless electric string trimmer, make sure to check its compatibility with other batteries and find out how long it usually takes before the replacement is needed. Also, consider what additional attachments (if any) can be used with the model.
Length and Weight
Finally, the next logical issue to take into account is the length and weight of every weed whacker. If you are not really a bodybuilder, you should choose a smaller and more lightweight tools. Keep in mind that though you can adjust the length of the shaft, you still need to know the maximum length it can be extended to.
