What is a Pool Ball
The game of pool have been popular all over the world for quite a long time, and it still attracts new supporters. No wonder, because it is a great opportunity to spend time with friends or family. That is why the choice of such an important item of accessories as the pool balls requires a conscious approach. A set of balls usually includes 16 coloured balls, one of which is a white cue ball, plus 7 solid and 7 striped balls of the same colours (yellow, blue, violet or purple, orange, green, and dark brown) but striped are more like white with a colour stripe in the middle. According to the current standards, the solid balls have numbers 1 through 7 and the striped balls are marked from 9 through 15. There is one more ball bearing number 8 and coloured in black, as a rule.If you turned to be interested in the pool game recently, we recommend you to start with selecting a pool table.
What Features to Compare
MaterialBefore purchasing pool balls you should gain understanding of several important ideas. The balls are usually made of either phenolic resin (frequently referred to as Aramith because of the respective trademark name) or polyester resin. The phenolic balls are very sturdy and almost impossible to scratch. They are also very durable and popular among professional pool players with a powerful stroke. You should also take into account the fact that after the stroke the ball whirls and its temperature may increase considerably. But the balls made of phenol-aldehyde polymeric resin are highly resistant to overheating and, thus, almost never lose their shape. The models made of polyester resin are less sophisticated but much more common and affordable.
Dimensions
The weight and size of pool balls are predetermined and go as follows: a diameter of the ball should equal 2¼” while its weight should measure 5½–6 oz. These dimensions may differ depending on what kind of billiards you play. The balls for snooker, for example, have a slightly smaller diameter of 2-1/15” and weight of 4.9 oz. To play rail billiards, you’d need to have 2½” and 7⅕ oz balls at hand.
Outlook
The colour scheme of pool balls is a big part of the game, so it has to conform to the standards. The pool game is played by two teams; each of them must strike either fully-coloured or striped balls only. But some manufacturers produce balls in different colours to the standard. Even though the balls don't look the same, two teams can easily spot their designated set.
