Doing More with More

Cottam is presenting an excellent package here, more than what people have come to expect from these kits. First, the slimline design lets you paint and coat behind heavy fixtures like radiators, sinks, and toilets. Second, the kit's more versatile than most. Packing two foam rollers, two polyacryl rollers, and one velour roller, you're able to work with more surface variety, tackling various DIY projects, even upcycling shelves, furniture, and mantels.

The poly rollers are great with water-based paints like emulsion, primers, and chalk paints applied onto smooth and lightly uneven surfaces. The foam ones are fine with both water- and oil-based paints (gloss, eggshell, enamel, undercoat, and more) and will let you paint flat surfaces, not unlike walls, skirts, and windowsills. The velour roller head also works with most paint types, including wood stain, varnish, and the paints that we've prescribed to foam rollers above. This head should normally be reserved for smooth surfaces, from wood to plaster and tiles.

Setting application aside, what separates this kit is the tray that enables comfortable storage and easy transportation so that you can always bring these rollers and the frame with you. What also separates this package is that the strands on the poly rollers come off pretty easily, so we would recommend erring on the side of caution with these rollers. The foam rollers and the velour one are quite tough though.

Bottom line, there's not much you won't be able to do with this paint roller set. You'll be able to add touch-ups to skirting boards, that goes without saying. You'll also be able to paint more difficult areas at home.

More than Enough Rollers

ProDec Advance ARRF007 is not about variety, it is about making sure that you have enough rollers to complete the task. Unlike the kit we've reviewed above, this one is packing 10 interchangeable heads, so you might not be able to access all spaces and coat all surfaces with these but the rollers offset this issue with efficiency alone.

Made from microfibre fabric, these roller heads are better at loading paint than the ones using woven fabrics. Because that's the case, the rollers are also able to secure consistent uniform paint release, meaning that they require little-to-no working out. You'll be able to achieve the smoothest finish and avoid the orange peel effect. Plus, these heads do not shed, so you're not forced to pick loose bristles from fresh paint when you're done coating.

The frame's normally overlooked when people are examining these roller paint kits but that's not something we'll be doing here since, aside from its sturdy stainless steel construction, the frame's fitted with a handle that features rubberised coating, so you won't have to worry about the roller slipping from your hands.

In short, ProDec Advance ARRF007 will allow you to stock up and be ready to paint and coat whenever, with ease and efficiency to match.

The Bare Necessities

Hamilton 34242-001 is the least bloated kit. There's nothing here that most customers won't be using. First things first, you have the black tray, pretty compact (~29 x 16 x 4 centimetres) yet able to accommodate five rollers and the frame so that you're able to carry the set with you. The frame's quite short but also fitted with this hanging hole that enables more storage options and will allow you to keep the frame accessible so that you don't have to rummage through the tool boxes. The handle on the frame is ergonomic, providing non-slip qualities even without rubberised coating.

Admittedly, all these components are not as significant as the rollers. They're not bad too though. Made from high-density foam, the rollers are able to minimise fibre loss and make sure the finish is always smooth and even. You can use these rollers with most paint types but oil-based gloss paints are the most compatible with them, especially when applied onto smooth surfaces. On the negative side, they form too many bubbles initially but they go away pretty quickly.

To sum up, Hamilton 34242-001 is what will attract most customers unwilling to pay through the nose but in need of quality paint rollers regardless.

Detailed Work Too

More often than not, the time comes when you have to paint and coat pretty much the entire house, from large surfaces and structures walls, ceilings, and doors to small spaces in-between these structures and different furniture pieces. That's when Harris 4337 Paint Brush and Twin Sleeve Roller Kit will come in handy. The biggest difference here is that, aside from two rollers and the frame, the tray comes housing two brushes, one 2.5 centimetres (1 inch) wide and one 5 centimetres (2 inches) wide. These brushes will enable cutting in and handle more detailed work. Plus, the synthetic filament bristles and the stainless steel ferrule make these brushes fairly long-lasting, so you won't be throwing them away anytime soon.

Meanwhile, the pile-knitted sleeves (roller heads) will let you coat larger surfaces. Made from polyacryl, these sleeves are great at picking up paint and ensuring excellent coverage. Also, they're compatible with emulsion paints. They can be quite difficult to remove from the handle but, with time, you'll get used to the task.

In closing, Harris 4337 Paint Brush and Twin Sleeve Roller Kit is more comprehensive/expansive than most paint roller kits, so you'll be able to use this set to complete more projects.

Spend Nothing yet Secure Solid Results

Axus Décor Mini Roller Kit costs practically nothing, partially due to the "mini" part but even then the kit's price is too attractive to skip this one. Sure, all that you receive here is one roller frame, two rollers, and a tray but that's enough to complete most tasks around the house, even paint walls and ceilings, though that will take some time with the standard 10-centimetre wide rollers.

The frame's nothing to sneeze at though, featuring this comfortable plastic handle with rubberised padding to absorb pressure and reduce hand strain over prolonged periods. Besides that, the frame is chrome-plated, able to prevent forming rust patches and eliminate corrosion.

From where we're standing, the only disappointing part here is that the handle does not include a hanging hole, so you'll usually have to keep the entire tray close to make sure the roller's accessible. On the bright side, this plastic tray is pretty small and compressed, so big-time space sacrifices will not be necessary here.

The two rollers are made from high-density foam, preventing them from deforming easily and enabling the rollers to achieve the finest finish when used with oil-based coatings. In other words, when the task at hand is not to paint the entire house, Axus Décor Mini Roller Kit will probably fit you to a tee.

What Is a Paint Roller?

From decking and fences to walls, ceilings, and even less considerable structures and spaces, most things around the house (and the things that basically comprise/constitute any premises) have to be coated with fresh paint from time to time. The task always takes time and effort, there's nothing you can do about that (except outsource the task to someone else but this approach has its downsides too). But, aside from the benefits that come from the DIY method, there are also tools that are able to minimise the time and effort necessary to complete these tasks. With good paint rollers, you're able to coat most surfaces, without worrying about paint compatibility and problems like that. These tools usually enable consistent uniform release so that you can paint non-stop and produce matching results, keeping the finish smooth and even. The best rollers usually incorporate high-density foam, microfibre, or polyacryl since these fabrics are not only great at absorbing and releasing paint but also do not shed as much as standard, worn-out fabrics.

You can also use these rollers and radiator paints when painting sizable radiators and hot water pipes (emphasis on the sizable part) and these paint brushes when the size is nothing out of the ordinary.
